Understand, Ideation, Critique, Make, Define

Week One: Thursday

In today's lecture we discussed the meanings of the categories that we will be using throughout the design process.
In class we had a task where we personified our hometown (Blenheim for me), and then did the same to Wellington as a group. After discussing our thoughts with the whole class, we moved onto going over our ideas for our brochure topic one on one with Fay and Matt.

The lecture helped me to better understand the layout of the blog (supplemented by the learning we did in the lab).
The task in class really helped to clarify how we should be thinking about this assignment in terms of making it unique to Wellington and not ubiquitous to lots of other cities. This is something that I can tell is going to be very important to the overall look and feel of the assignment.
After discussing my ideas with Fay - my favourites in particular, cocktails and dog spotting - I had more inspiration for the layers of the design, and had made a decision about which idea to pursue (dog spotting).

Week One: Monday

In this class we discussed the brief and began to understand what the requirements are for the assignment. Our first task was to create three postcards showing something that we did over the holiday. The three designs were a line drawing, a negative and one cutting black paper. The postcards depicted what the activity was, where it was and an intangible, such as a feeling, a taste, a smell. The second task was creating a mind-map with our group on everything we knew about Wellington. Lastly, we filled out grids with two ideas each for the headings "Food & Drink, Sports & Recreation and Arts & Culture". The postcard task helped me to understand the different layers that are involved in the designs for this assignment, how we must be able to convey an intangible in some way - which is not always that easy! The mind-map was also super useful as I was working with people who know Wellington a whole lot better than I do and they were able to give me more ideas to work with. I am finding it a little difficult to come up with a range of ideas since I don't feel like I know locations around the city very well.
